Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Opinion - Why Ghost Recon: Future Soldier's Delays Are Needed
Written Friday, January 27, 2012 By Lee Bradley
View author's profile

While previewing the latest build of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier recently, I saw first hand just why the game has been subject to delays. During my demo I encountered a series of bugs and glitches, none of which are especially worrying and all of which can be easily rectified. But one issue stuck in my mind.

You can check out my full preview of the game here, but read on for an example of a slightly different problem – an element of the game's design that's both illogical and antithetical to it's notion of player choice. Remember though, this isn't a doom-mongering post. This is merely an indication of the kind of tweaks and fixes Ubisoft Paris will have to implement before Future Soldier's May launch.

All hell had broken lose. Deep within a Colombian refugee camp, a firefight had erupted between my team of Ghosts and a warlord's well-armed militia. Grenades, gunfire and screams rang out.

Methodically making our way through the camp, the militia fell one by one until we reached the last aggressor. He was popping in and out of cover on top of a single-storey, flat-roofed hut. Easy pickings, I thought. Trouble is, every time I tried to gun him down he would suppress me, with the screen shaking so wildly it was difficult to get a shot off.

To make matters worse, when I wasn't being suppressed I was being downed, meaning an agonising wait for an AI teammate to revive me. Some of the Ubisoft Paris developers watched over my shoulder as I played.

After about five more minutes of public humiliation (I'm sure I got him that time! - I thought), one of the devs tapped me on the shoulder. “Why don't you tag him? Then your teammates can get him,” he said. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier draws upon team orders, just as in the previous games.

“No no, he's mine. I can feel it,” I foolishly replied, stubbornly digging myself deeper into a hole that the game wouldn't let me out of. Besides, my teammates had been shooting at this dude too, shouldn't they have got him by now anyway?

Easily another five minutes passed. Maybe ten. Maybe it was days. I lobbed grenades up onto the roof right next to him. That didn't help. Perhaps I was further away than I thought. I landed what felt like glancing, but fatal headshots. That didn't work either.

Eventually, the developer tapped me on the shoulder again. “I've just had a word with the person that actually designed this level,” he said. “You can't progress until you've tagged the enemy and a teammate has made the shot. Whether that's a good design decision or not...” he tailed off.

Between us, my teammates and I had probably pumped enough lead, explosives and shrapnel into this warlord's henchman to kill him ten times over, but he had barely flinched. It would only recognise a hit once I had clicked a certain button.

Plenty of games prevent you from shooting allies. Often they take certain aspects of control away from you. But in the heat of a firefight, with one standard enemy in front of you being shot repeatedly in the face, you expect him to go down. Or at very least, you expect to be prompted with the desired approach.

Yet that wasn't the case. One of the targets of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is to provide an experience that you can approach as you see fit. Want to take it slow and stealthy? Fine. Want to go in all guns blazing? That's cool too. But here, in this instance, everything crumpled to the floor. You could only do one specific, illogical thing to progress.

This issue wasn't a bug, or a glitch – it was an integral part of the game's design. So the decision to hold back Future Soldier is a wise choice. Ubisoft Paris needs more time to clean this kind of thing up. They need more time to provide the kind of experience that we all expect from the series, while also evolving it. Do that and they'll finally have a game worthy of the Ghost Recon name.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is currently scheduled for release in North America on May 22nd, 2012 and May 25th, 2012 in Europe.

No the delays are not needed if the game is not finished then come up with a new date when it close to a complete product. all the delays of GRFS all it done was delay the development of rainbow six as i said a few years ago we won't get a new rainbow six till GRFS is out

What happened to the Tom Clancy brand? They used to be the best tactical shooters on the market. Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon & Splinter Cell owned the game space when it came to tactical games. I really miss the type of games all 3 of these series were the last generation.

Honestly I was looking forward to this game, but the long delays just are a huge turn off for buying this game. I seen some of the gameplay they have shown from time to time and it's nothing spectacular. Really surprised they haven't trashed the project. Good luck to anyone who still has hope for this game.

I love how people make Duke Nukem Forever jokes when a game gets delayed a few times. Considering this game has been delayed for about a year and a half and Duke was delayed over ten years.

Totally the same thing.

It definitely seems like they need a prompt on screen, if that is the only way to down the guy and progress with the level.

Blah Blah. If the glitches are so easy to fix they could have fixed them before the March release. The only reason it was delayed is because of Mass Effect 3 and Max Payne 3. Every Dev tries to deny it but they all run scared if there game is too close to another big game release.

This post is fairly embarrassing. If it was a demo session, it was clearly also meant to be a tutorial. They were at the beginning of the GRAW games too, and you can't progress until you completed the tutorial objective - like almost any game with a tutorial.

Maybe you should have listened to the guy, or in game direction if it was there. However, it was probably his job to tell you... and you ignored it, so whatever. They would never put something like that in a final build outside of a tutorial. No dev is THAT stupid.

people say ea and activison dont care about quality and only want a quick buck and such, funny ubisoft went down that same road too, assassins creed revalations was pitiful the rainbow 6 series hasnt had a decent game in years now looks like ghost recon is going the same way i remember e3 2010 this game looked good a year later it looked pathetic and i still have a code from splinter cell conviction for the beta that was supposed to be out 2 summers ago...............wait what?

Argeed with 21 + 23, Peeps go grab GRAW1 and GRAW2 each tutorial is like this, they want to demonstrate each aspect of the game during the tutorial mission.

@24, AC:R wasn't the best game ever but should we really assume ubisoft is the next ea/activison? Also rainbow 6 hasnt had a game in years, last i remember was vegas 2 which was great and still maintains online population to this day, same with GRAW2. Beta codes a funny story though (:

My May is sorted anyway.

@#21 - A demo session? Sounds like you're making excuses for the dev team if you ask me. Since when in a shooter of any kind, where freedom is one of the tenets of gameplay, are your bullets suddenly useless against enemy foes and only your crew's bullets worthy. Imagine that in way...

Soldier #1 - "Fuck man, this guy is invincible!!"
Soldier #2 - "Maybe he's immune to them, let me try mine..." *fires gun*
Soldier #1 - "Not working either... hey you, try your bullets..."
Soldier #3 - *fires gun* "Yup, mine work... let's move on..."

What kind of gameplay mechanic is that where you force the player into playing the game the developer wants? You bought the game, you should be allowed to do the killing... it's common courtesy.

@27 - If this was supposed to act as the tutorial, and this game is based on teamwork and cooperation, I'm guessing it's simply teaching you how to tag, and how the tagging system works. That's the point of the tutorial, I feel. I highly doubt after this section of the demo you will need to tag in order to kill. I just think it's to teach you how to tag, and the effects of tagging.

I hope that's the case, anyway.

@#21 So the game will come with a dev to tell me "hey you can't kill that guy have your team do it"? Did you read the full review? Lee played four missions. Four. That doesn't sound like a game tutorial. Especially when he says the missions were pulled right from the middle of the campaign. He goes onto say many positive things about the game while pointing out the glaring negatives. Things that should definitely be fixed. And more than likely will be. If we accept as is and just deal with it that would be nonsensical. Defending complacency will breed complacency. Basically his full review states there are some potentially bad glitches and suspect mechanics. If Ubisoft fixes, polishes, and differentiates this game then it should have a bright future.

Thats why you dont hire dumbass level designers.

I like that they are taking the time to correct these things, as it sounds like it would have made me rather frustrated if I was playing that part.

Not even a prompt? Definitely need some fixing there. Or simply get rid of that part of the game and rework it.

What do you make of the "Whether that's a good design decision or not...” statement? Is it a defense of the gameplay or a thought it may need to be changed? I really can't tell myself. Hopefully this will be the final delay. Either way for those who have been intently following the game I hope it all turns out great when it releases.

I'm pretty sure this will have been a case of a prompt should have come up on the screen but for some reason didn't. Possibly a bug or a glitch, which happens with pre-release material.

Possibly a voice over that was supposed to say "tag this guy" or something just didn't happen.

I still think that if this follows the GRAW 1 and 2 mechanics, it will be just as good - if not better than them. Screw the Kinect integration though.

The section I played was from the second or third mission. Tagging had been introduced in an earlier sequence.

Most of this chatter is missing the point, anyway. If it was a tutorial, then it should have tutored me. It should have given clearer instructions and integrated them in a logical, informative manner. This was not logical, nor was it informative. And it wasn't representative of the aims of the game.

That's why we covered it. This piece isn't designed to put you off Ghost Recon. It's designed to give you further insight into the stage of development it's at right now. I'm not sure many other sites do that.

sounds like the only choice is to tag him. why not let us deside how to take out enemies. i hate it when there's invisble walls like this. very bad level design, i hope they change this. if it stays, its a game breaker for me. i mean, a friggin grenade, how realistic is that?

Why are people gettin worked up and slating the game already?! Its still in development, and of course there will be bugs, all games have them prior to release. Skyrim had chickens that reported crimes for crying out loud.

Ghost Recon and Rainbow 6 have been 2 of my favourite series of games over the last 5 years when it comes to tactical shooters. I for one, will give this a go if I can afford it.

I'm definitely surprised at the hate for Tom Clancy games.I arrived relatively lat at the TC party. The first TC game I played was R6:Vegas which I loved, the sequel even more so (multiplayer is pretty much unrivaled in terms of customization to this day (not to mention I got insanely good with the L96 Arctic Warfare, almost trolling standard)). Then I played GRAW which was a bit of a letdown for me (again the sequel more so however), Splinter Cell DA was a bit "meh" for me (although I probably didn't really "get it" at the time) and i'll take Hitman over it for stealth based gameplay any day. Then Conviction came out and I literally pissed myself and gave birth to a baby simultaneously because this game was literally like Jason Bourne The Game, only with Sam Fisher, copious amounts of broken bones from krav maga elbow strikes to the head, and being the proverbial don of a game (ironically, unlike the actual Bourne game on 360). But yeah back to the matter at hand, i'll puck this up but i'm not expecting great things. Can't wait for the next HAWX, Rainbow and SC outings though!

Its not like Ubisoft hasn't made some bizzare design choices before, desmonds first-person sections in revelations and the whole monochrome thing when you were being stealthy in SCC that meant if you played the game properly it was never in colour spring to mind

Although couldnt care less for this game, and can understand the frustratement in single gameplay machanics to progress, dont enough games do this?
I mean how many boss fights have you tried, where youve tried shooting at its eye, back of knees, obvious glowing points hoping theyre take it down. Then finding that you have to switch a special environment effect, of press one game changing or contextual button.
While even games like Lost Planet have started to give different options, we're still going to see the same gameplay conventions through games even in the next generation. Theyre never going away.
Can only hope to see more options open in these larger titles. ie Long way: Pummel the boss with everything youve got. Shorter: Use team. Shortest:Use skill and team: Get team to flank enemy into environmental hazzard, use skill to snipe hazzard to take enemy out. etc

I really hope you can do campaign co-op this time as the AI in the last two G.R.A.W games was awful, You tag an enemy for one of your troopers to take out & all i used to get was 'Can't do that sir/Can't take the shot sir' so in the end i just did everything my bloody self & my Ghost rating at the end?

LONE WOLF (what a surprise there eh?) Got this on pre order & have been waiting for it since it was announced years back, P.S put in any perks ect & i'll cancel my pre-order instantly

I'm surprised Ubisoft isn't looking into Kinect support for this game. I'm not a fan of the Kinect... but "Mass Effect 3" has me seeing the Kinect FINALLY being used in a really good way.

I mean... steering a raft down a river or chopping fruit - seriously?! I would love to issue voice-commands to my squad, instead of using "just" the controller (which was always clunky, to a degree)!

I guess we'll have to wait for "Ghost Recon WAY-IN-THE-FUTURE Soldier" to have Kinect support!!

As far kinect goes or what ubisoft has showed us its mostly used for the "gunsmith" part, it would suprice me if they had added anything like squad commands or simulair things in Ghost Recon. I,m not a huge fan of kinect either, so far the game-line-up that supports or uses kinect not realy drawn my attention, okay mabye Mass Effect 3 might change that, but sinds i not got kinect i not see myself getting one just because of ME3 or GRAW. But even i was dissapointed by again another delay of this game i,m willing to wait and still have my hopes up for this game, even...yes even what we see now of the game not even looks close to what they showed us at the E3 in 2010, then i was so excited about this game, i still don,t get it why they dumped all that and build a totaly different looking game. Anyways! Ghosts get ready!
